BIG NEWS!

Are you ready for this?

Writing is really FUN!

"What?" you ask.

"No WAY!" you say.

But think about it...when you write a story, poem, or essay, you are the master of your universe, able to create and control characters, events, time, perspective--everything! As you choose your words and weave them together, they turn into fabulous adventures or fascinating reports or tales that tug on the heartstrings of your readers. When you are the author, your imagination is your only limitation. That's pretty cool, right?

Writing can also help you to solve problems, share feelings, figure things out, present information, and express yourself in many different ways. A poem about your family, an essay about a special memory, a story about an imaginary dinosaur, or a report on black holes all say something important about YOU.

So the next time you sit down to write, remind yourself how LUCKY you are to have a pencil in your hand (or a keyboard in front of you), and enjoy the adventure!

QUESTIONS from kids:

When did you start writing stories?
In kindergarten I wrote and illustrated my first book--a story about a colorful, huge, invisible dinosaur named Candy Cane. Candy Cane was my good friend, and we had lots of adventures together. Hanging out with a friendly brontosaurus is lots of fun!

Where do you get your story ideas?
From my life, and from my imagination. I taught elementary school for several years before my boys were born, which is where I got the idea for my chapter book series. And I live with two 12-year-old boys, who are funny and inspiring and FULL of great ideas! I also volunteer in classrooms and at my church, so I get a lot of ideas from being around those kids, too. Kids say the funniest, smartest things, and have a way of looking at things that I pay attention to!

Do you have any pets?
Yes! I have a sweet puppy named Gracie. She likes to play and chew things (everything!), and she especially loves to snuggle. Every time I sit down to write on the couch, she sits right up next to me, and when I work on the computer in my office, she makes herself comfy in my grandmother's chair. She is a great writing buddy!
